Although I recruited well, my success was relative. The folks at EA Sports had warned me that the days when a Group of 5 program could land a five-star talent were over, and they were right, even if the game cheated me. Several times I bet big on a four-star player who had me at the top of his list at first, but then the Power 4 schools rose up as the weeks passed and the player narrowed his choices from a top 10 list to eight, five and three. If you don't make the list, you're locked out and can no longer recruit that player. I didn't land a blue-chip player despite my efforts, probably in part because my simulated seasons never got my program's prestige high enough.
The same was true for the transfer portal, which is added to recruiting after bowl games for an extra four-week recruiting period. Only a few transfers were interested in my program each year. In terms of losing players, every week during the season you can see which players are at high risk of transferring and why. I lost my No. 1 running back due to “brand exposure” that I couldn't correct. After the season, you get a list of players who want to switch teams and a certain number of “persuasion attempts”. Players' chances of staying vary from “none” to “high”. In one offseason, I was able to keep two out of five players, including one whose chances of staying were “very low”.

Your pre-season recruiting board is extremely important and sets the tone for the rest of your recruiting year. The game gives you a “recommended” option in the drop-down menu to let you know who you have a realistic chance of adding. When you're spending hours on potential candidates, “Social Media Search” and “DM Recruiting” are the cheapest options to learn what factors matter to a candidate. You don't actually get to see their old tweets, which is probably for the best.
The most pleasant thing about recruitment is that recruitment actions are “active” and ongoing, continuing from week to week. So you don't have to spend hundreds of hours every week. You can add or remove hours spent on prospects as you like, just like you can drop out of a race if you can see that it's not going well, freeing up time for other activities.
While the game limits the editing of real players to their equipment, new prospects can have their names, positions, handedness, physique and QB style edited once they are on your team. You can't edit their attributes or their jersey number.
(In case you're wondering, Colorado started 8-1 and became a top-10 team in year 1 of this dynasty. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel won the Heisman. I played UCF in the Liberty Bowl. Hooray for rivalries! Then Charlotte quarterback Max Brown won the Heisman in Year 2, and Jacksonville State finished third in the CFP in Year 3. It's the old game I know and love).
In this game, you can fire your assistant coaches for the first time, and it has to happen before the bowl games. You can then hire replacements in the following weeks of the bowl season. While I was the USF coach, I was offered the job of offensive and defensive coordinator for Michigan State for two consecutive offseasons. That's because when you create a coach, you choose his alma mater, and mine was Michigan State, so the game recognizes that you might want to go there. Your coach's home state is designated as a recruiting pipeline, regardless of where he coaches.

A note on custom conferences: Conferences require between four and 20 teams. So while the Pac-2 exists with Oregon State and Washington State, you can't get back down to two teams if you add others to the league. Custom conferences can change every offseason. I don't know if you can get invited to another league like in the old days, because my USF team wasn't good enough to get invited.
One criticism: The game doesn't play fight songs over the menus, just a drumbeat. And when you're a couple hours into Dynasty or Road to Glory, the drum kit can get very annoying. I muted the game at one point. That's my biggest criticism. It would be nice to be able to switch to battle songs or something else.
