College Football 25 Early Access, How to Play With The Best Team Builder

College Football 25 Gameplay

The gameplay is incredibly smooth and fast. It's obviously light years better than the old NCAA Football games, but it also feels different than Madden 24. Running the ball is more fun than it's ever been, so much so that I hated getting into passing situations because it meant I couldn't just try another RPO or read-option game. Jukes and spins can often look and feel seamless. If you hit the hole, you get rewarded.

Passing the ball definitely required an adjustment. The new “revamped” passing game shows a meter above the catcher's head, which has a dramatic impact on how good your throw is. However, the game's settings allow you to switch to classic passing mode, making the passing game easier. “Location” and “location and accuracy” are also available.

One of the biggest frustrations in the game is the frequency with which receivers drop the ball when trying to catch it mid-contact. It makes the game more realistic, but it will have you yelling at your TV more than a few times.

By far the hardest part of the game is kicking. The two-part kick meter has players pressing the button to kick accurately and holding it down for power. Just like passing, holding the button down for too long will ruin your accuracy, even on kickoffs. I missed some field goals pretty badly; I guess it's #CollegeKickers after all. Special teams are generally an adventure. In one day, I saw two roughing the punter penalties committed by computer players (one on my team, one on the opponent's), and my team's CPU blocked a field goal.

It's also harder to tackle: you have to be precise and wrap up or the ball carrier will escape your tackle. Again, kudos to the game designers, because the tackling moves look really good.

Playing defense has always been difficult and it's even harder in this game. I don't know if it's because of my own abilities or because of the CPU (on Varsity difficulty), but I had trouble stopping the opponent on most drives. The CPU has so much more insight and skill than before. Its attacks sped up periodically when my players were tired. It recognized when I called the same play twice in a row. On fourth-and-1, the defense sells out to the run. It's not an easy conversion.

My only issue with the game over the three days occurred when the opponent went to the no-huddle. My defensive lineman was lined up and then floated to the other side of the line of scrimmage, creating an offside penalty. It only happened once. I've also experienced some lag in the transition between play selection and play action, but that might just be my console. My colleague Ari Wasserman didn't have that problem on PlayStation 5.

Finally, let's talk about the playbooks. Wow, those playbooks. There has never been a soccer game with so many play options. In addition to all the typical passing and running plays, there are more read-option plays than ever before, different kinds of RPOs, triple-option plays and even a Wildcat formation available in certain playbooks. Just make sure you throw the ball fast enough on RPOs or you'll get a penalty for illegal man downfield.
